The Connaught Christmas Tree 2019 has been designed by internationally acclaimed artist Sean Scully and unveiled outside the hotel beside the world-famous Tadao Ando fountain. This marks the start of the festive season on Mount Street in Mayfair.

Sean Scully is considered to be one of the world’s leading abstract painters. Born in Dublin and raised in London, he now lives between New York and Germany. Appropriately, therefore, Scully’s art is thoroughly international in perspective, drawing on the diverse historical and cultural influences of places that, at different times, have been profoundly important to him. Scully’s work is noted for its impressively controlled abstract power, but at the heart of each rigorously composed work is a near-infinite number of expressive, emotional fluctuations. As he has said of abstraction more generally, this is a form of art that “was meant to embody deep emotion. I believe that’s its job, in the history of art.”

This magnificent Norway Spruce tree has been sourced in Hertfordshire, standing 9m tall on Carlos Place. The tree has been transformed into Sean Scully’s distinctive and commanding, internationally recognisable style of abstract art, adorned in four nuanced blocks of colour featuring blue, purple, red and yellow - the tree holds no less than 25,000 light bulbs.

Paddy McKillen of The Connaught said “We have had a personal friendship with Sean for twenty years, and are so honoured that this year, he agreed to add his magical touch to our precious Connaught Christmas Tree 2019. I hope his tree will be enjoyed by our guests, Mayfair neighbours and indeed all of London as we countdown to Christmas.”

This will be the fifth year The Connaught Christmas Tree has been designed by a celebrated artist including Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin and Michael Craig-Martin. The Connaught has long-since established itself as playing a significant role in the art world, amassing a considerable art collection over its 170 year history.
