PREVIEW & LUNCH AT THE NEWLY RELAUNCHED GEORGE CLUB, MOUNT STREET

Canine companions rejoice! George, the favourite haunt of London’s most sophisticated hounds (and their lucky human companions) has reopened after a hiatus for refurbishment. George has long been beloved as London’s most dog-friendly member’s club, and the launch of the refreshed venue gives pampered pooches much to celebrate.

The newly renovated club, designed by Richard Caring and spearheaded by Patricia Caring, captures all of the atmosphere of a heritage club with the modern creature comforts we’ve all come to rely on. The elegant blue interiors make the perfect setting for meetings day or night. What’s more, the club is home to Mayfair’s largest terrace, open until 1am (just in time for those warm summer nights). The refurbishment also brings with it George’s first ever private dining room, which we can guarantee will be popular for special occasions. The room seats 16, making it the perfect size for intimate gatherings.

As can always be expected from any Caring venture, the level of service is impeccable. Head mixologist Santo Borzi is responsible for crafting a range of sustainable, Mediterranean inspired cocktails such as ‘The Royal Hound’ and ‘A Bigger Splash’. Meanwhile, Executive Head Chef Marcus Eaves has produced an intensely seasonal and local menu that will change throughout the year, giving diners plenty of reasons to keep coming back.

The team at George kindly welcomed us for a preview lunch and private tour of the new club. Upon entering, we were delighted to be greeted by George himself, the dachshund to whom the club owes its name and logo. He regularly occupies a dog-sized chintz sofa in the entrance, checking that any prospective members pass muster. We were treated to cocktails, canapés and endlessly flowing Champagne. The friendly staff are just the right amount of bad influence to ensure that lunch (which extended well into the afternoon) was a raucous, decadent affair. The menu was a procession of summer pleasures, from red mullet to stuffed courgette flowers and a fresh elderflower take on a classic Eton mess (Writer’s note: can we make ‘pre-dessert’ a feature of every set menu?).

After lunch, a tour of the subterranean bar gave us a peek into the art deco decadence of the club after dark. Guests will be able to sip on zero waste cocktails at the beautiful antique brass bar while enjoying the sounds of emerging musical talent.

Of course, one cannot fully describe George without highlighting their impressive collection of artwork. Aside from a love of dogs, an interest in art and culture has long been a defining characteristic of George’s body of members. In addition to their extensive collection of works by Hockney, the club has stunning bespoke bronzes sculptures of dachshunds and German Shepherds by Jill Berelowitz to watch over revelers. All the bronzes were cast at the Morris Singer Foundry in Hampshire, as well as the Bronze Bar.
