FINE ART RESTORATION COMPANY REVIVES MAYFAIR HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE

Fine Art Restoration Company, a leading conservation company in the UK, recently completed a full restoration of the impressive neoclassical ceiling at Mayfair’s Crockfords, at 30 Curzon Street. This was part of a larger project to preserve the rich heritage of this Grade I listed building, with Fine Art  Restoration’s conservation experts providing further designs for the building.

30 Curzon Street was added to The National Heritage List for England’s buildings of special architectural or historical interest in 1958, as it maintains the architectural designs of the iconic Robert Adam. Adam drew inspiration from classical ancient Greek and Roman art and culture, a defined aesthetic that became known as The Adam Style. By the 1770s, London’s most fashionable hot spots boasted Adam’s neoclassical interior, pastel colour palette and Hellenistic inspired designs, including the newly constructed Curzon Street in Mayfair.

The Bohemian Room on the ground floor at Crockfords is one of the last remaining areas in the property where Robert Adam’s original decor can be seen. Early Georgian interiors principally followed strict mathematical proportions, yet Adam favoured curved walls, as seen in the Bohemian Room - false vaulting, highlighting the decorative plasterwork at all angles.

Fine Art Restoration Company began work at Crockfords in 2022, with the aim to restore the curved ceiling, rich with forgotten motifs, and to maintain one of Robert Adam’s last remaining architectural gems. Original designs under layers of paint and time were uncovered and conserved, and the interior has now been brought back to life with historical accuracy. This delightful project is to pave the way for the rest of the building’s planned renovations.

Chris Bull, Technical Director of Fine Art Restoration Company comments:This has been a  fantastic project for our team of conservators. We were able to preserve a beautiful example of  the Adam style, a key part of British design history. It has been a pleasure to assist Crockfords  Casino in restoring a vital part of our cultural heritage.”
