THE MAYFAIR CHIPPY REVIEW: A COSY WINTER FAVOURITE FOR FAMILY DINING IN MAYFAIR

There are few things quite as comforting as a really good fish and chip supper, and a recent family visit to The Mayfair Chippy reminded me why this much-loved Mayfair institution continues to draw such a loyal following. Combining the familiarity of a traditional British fish and chip shop with a more considered, contemporary setting, it is the sort of restaurant that manages to feel both special and wonderfully relaxed.
Before ordering, we took the staff’s recommendation to try the TMC Crisps as the children enjoyed some colouring: hand-cut Maris Piper potatoes, available in Spudos Salt & Vinegar (£2.50), Spudos Chip Shop Curry (£2.50) and Spudos Mixed Seasoning (£2.50). Quite possibly the best crisps we have ever had (sorry Tyrells), they are wonderfully thick, gloriously crunchy and packed with flavour. A deceptively simple snack, but one we are excited to order again on our next visit.
Next up was the TMC Prawn Toast (£14.95). Featuring king prawns on fried butter loaf, accompanied by sriracha mayonnaise, it was exquisite - totally indulgent and considerably more generous in size than expected. It is a dish worth sharing, although you may find yourself reluctant to do so.

For the main course, I opted for the Fish Finger Butty (£19.95), served in brioche with tartar sauce, pickles and hand-cut chips. A classic for good reason, it was everything a fish finger sandwich should be, with a generous portion. The chips were moreish, although I wouldn't recommend attempting running for a cab afterwards!
The children were very well catered for, with the two courses and a drink menu priced at just £9.95. Their fish goujons went down a treat, followed by strawberry gelato, which disappeared rather quickly. Meanwhile, I finished with a Valrhona milk chocolate mousse with salted caramel and candied hazelnuts (£10.25) - an exquisite dessert that signalled the end of our lovely family meal.
One of the highlights of our trip to this infamous chippy was the service. The staff were genuinely wonderful, making a real fuss of the children and ensuring we all felt welcome throughout. The atmosphere is cosy and inviting, and the outdoor seating offers an excellent vantage point for some seriously good Mayfair people-watching.

With Christmas fast approaching, there is even more reason to visit The Mayfair Chippy. From 24th November to 24th December, the restaurant will be introducing a collection of festive specials, including a turkey and cranberry pie with sage and onion mash, pigs in blankets and all the trimmings, alongside a vintage cheddar and parsnip pie for vegetarians. There will also be festive Scotch eggs, mulled wine and deep-fried mince pies with cinnamon sugar and rum and raisin ice cream.
Whether stopping by after Christmas shopping, enjoying a family lunch or settling in for a cosy seasonal supper, The Mayfair Chippy is a thoroughly enjoyable addition to the neighbourhood. It is the sort of place that attracts beloved regulars as naturally as it catches passing fish - and, after our visit, I can quite understand why.
