Mayfair has always been a neighbourhood where history and modern elegance sit effortlessly side by side - and this September, one of its most charming corners welcomes a new arrival. The Shepherd Mayfair, a boutique hotel opening on 1st September 2026, is set to bring a fresh sense of style, warmth and hospitality to Shepherd Market, and we’re already looking forward to stepping through its doors.
Built on one of London’s most fascinating historic plots, the hotel stands on the site of ‘The Cottage’, Mayfair’s oldest house dating back to 1618. Once home to a shepherd tending his flock, the surrounding fields later became the setting for the annual May Fair before Edward Shepherd transformed the area into the intimate enclave we know today. That rich heritage runs through every detail of the hotel’s identity.
At the heart of The Shepherd Mayfair is Fayre, its signature 62-cover restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in a setting that feels both refined and wonderfully welcoming. Designed with dark timber panelling, plush banquettes and a rich berry-toned palette, the interiors pay homage to Shepherd Market’s colourful past, with striking artwork by urban artist Adam Ellis bringing scenes of the historic fair to life.
The menu follows a similarly timeless approach, celebrating seasonal British produce and classic European cooking. Expect beautifully executed dishes designed for lingering lunches and leisurely dinners, from lobster and prawn brioche rolls and braised beef short rib croquettes to citrus-cured trout, scallops, dry-aged steaks and a rather tempting beef Wellington pithivier.
Rather than chasing fleeting trends, Fayre promises the kind of neighbourhood restaurant Mayfair has always done best: elegant yet relaxed, sophisticated but unpretentious, and somewhere equally suited to a spontaneous supper or a long-awaited catch-up.
