There are country escapes, and then there are places that make a weekend feel other-wordly. Rising above the treetops at Sandringham, the newly restored Water Tower is one such retreat: a remarkable Victorian landmark reimagined as an intimate hideaway for two.
Available exclusively through Oliver’s Travels, the neo-Byzantine tower dates to 1877, when renowned engineer James Mansergh was commissioned to create a new waterworks system for the Royal Estate. Today, its original circular form has been sensitively transformed into a four-level retreat, with winding staircases and curved walls leading guests ever upwards.
The interiors are quietly handsome, pairing heritage-inspired tones with understated furnishings and reclaimed materials from the Estate. Historic photographs offer glimpses into Sandringham’s past, while each level reveals a different perspective on the surrounding landscape. Downstairs, a kitchen, dining room and bathroom establish the practical comforts; above, a king-size bedroom looks across the Estate, followed by a cosy sitting room complete with a working fireplace, tucked among the treetops.
The pièce de résistance is reached by a narrow spiral staircase. The Tower’s original 32,000-gallon cast-iron water tank has been transformed into a private rooftop terrace, where a bistro table for two sits within the historic structure. From here, the views stretch in every direction across Sandringham’s parkland and the Norfolk countryside, with rare-breed cattle and sheep grazing far below.
There is something ultra romantic about the Tower’s history. Members of the Royal Family and their guests once gathered in its viewing room during shooting parties and picnics; now, the same elevated vantage point is reserved for overnight guests.
With Sandringham’s gardens and parkland on the doorstep, and North Norfolk’s beaches and coastal villages within easy reach, this is a stay that combines history, privacy and a very enviable view.
