MAYFAIR-BASED JAMES DABBS EXPLAINS WHY WE SHOULD ALL TRAIN LIKE AN ATHLETE
Monday 3rd August 2026
Dabbs Fitness was built on a simple idea: that everyone deserves access to the same level of coaching and sports science used by elite athletes. Not a watered-down version of it. The real thing, applied intelligently to the person in front of you.
Growing up playing elite sport and going on to play professional football, I understood early what true performance actually requires. I was training for power, speed, strength, and athleticism. Sleep, nutrition, and lifestyle weren't afterthoughts, they were part of the programme. I wasn't naturally gifted. I just worked hard and took it seriously. I remember running the London 10k at sixteen and finishing in 37 minutes. Not because I was exceptional, but because I had a genuine understanding of what the body is capable of when you train it properly.
That experience shaped everything about how Dabbs Fitness operates. What strikes me about modern wellness culture is how far removed it has become from the reality of sport and high performance. The market is saturated with entertaining bootcamps, clever supplements, and elaborate protocols, and yet the basics are almost never discussed. Athletes are the gold standard. They are the fittest people on earth, and they happen to look extraordinary as a by-product of that fitness, not as the goal of it. So why are we not looking to them for how to train?
The answer is simple. Structured strength and conditioning, good sleep, and solid nutrition, real food, adequate protein, fruit and vegetables, remain the most effective health and fitness protocol available. No secrets, no shortcuts. Just the fundamentals, applied consistently.
The misconception is that this approach belongs only to professionals. It doesn't. At Dabbs Fitness, we have demonstrated time and again, across ages, fitness levels, and life stages, including clients training through pregnancy, that everyone can and should train using athletic principles. What changes is the method, not the philosophy. We meet people where they are and build from there. Athlete is a mindset, not a starting point.
Where to Begin
If you want to start training like an athlete, focus on these:
Full body strength training. Non-negotiable, and increasingly critical as you age. Muscle mass directly affects hormonal health, metabolism, bone density, and longevity. Lift weights. Do it consistently.
Daily movement and cardiovascular fitness. Run, walk, cycle. Whatever keeps you moving. Cardiovascular health is the single greatest predictor of life expectancy. It is not optional.
Play sport and compete. This is the one most people overlook. Tennis, squash, football, golf, it doesn't matter. Competition challenges you mentally and physically in ways that no training session alone can replicate. It keeps you sharp, motivated, and connected to why you're doing this in the first place.
Sleep and nutrition. Train hard, eat well, sleep properly. There is no programme on earth that works without these.
Start training for performance, and you will start performing better in every area of your life. That is not a marketing line. It is simply what happens.
That is why we built Dabbs Fitness. And it is why we will never apologise for holding people to a higher standard.
