A STAY THE CLERMONT LONDON, VICTORIA, A CHARMING HOTEL BRIMMING WITH HISTORY
September 2025
The Lobby at The Clermont London, Victoria
Standing proudly beside Victoria Station, The Clermont London, Victoria, is a charming hotel that wears its history with such confidence. Set within a stunning Grade II-listed building on Buckingham Palace Rd, the hotel perfectly balances Victorian splendour with contemporary comfort, offering an experience that feels both indulgent and welcoming - but not pretentious.
I was delighted to return to The Clermont for this stay, a visit coloured by nostalgia. My earliest memory of the hotel goes back to childhood, when I stayed here with my grandmother - and even then, I was struck by its sense of occasion. Today, The Clermont remains as captivating as ever: totally timeless, beautifully finished, and brimming with British history. For example, at the start of the hotel’s life, first class passengers travelling out of Victoria Station were invited into the hotel to take refreshments before their onward journey!
The Clermont, Victoria, is the oldest of the group’s two properties, formerly known as The Grosvenor Hotel. Opened in 1862 as London’s first railway hotel, the building is a striking Baroque interpretation of the French Renaissance style, adorned with sculpted heads, laurel crowns, roses and plumes. Inside, the grandeur continues with stunning sweeping staircases, sparkling chandeliers and soaring ceilings - even the gold leaf in the lobby is real. Originally offering just 26 private rooms at the start, today the hotel has grown to 348, but retains its timeless sense of drama and history.
Check in is super fast, and rooms are generously proportioned for central London, some showcasing original period details, and all with a sleek modern finish. One thing that really surprised me, given the hotel’s proximity to bustling Victoria Station, is is how quiet the rooms are. Elegant furnishings, rainfall showers and Nespresso machines bring modern convenience, while high ceilings and thoughtful design ensure comfort. If you’re lucky, your room will overlook The Shakespeare, Market Halls, and the Apollo Victoria Theatre - home to Wicked, the much-loved musical that is still capturing hearts night after night.
The Brasserie serves British and European classics in an easy-going, unpretentious setting, with breakfast - especially the full English - a standout. For something more atmospheric, The Soak is the hotel’s signature dining destination. Low lighting, vaulted ceilings, arched windows and a striking oval bar create a stylish backdrop for leisurely lunches, relaxed dinners or celebratory cocktails. The playlist of contemporary music sets just the right tone - lively enough to generate a buzz without overpowering conversation. The menu, featuring lots of small plates, as well as mains, reimagines British favourites with Asian influences, all delivered with genuine warmth and flair.
Highlights from my visit to The Soak included Gravadlax, a cured smoked salmon dish with pickled red onion, marinated cucumber, dill, fennel shavings, melba toast, balsamic emulsion; Blacksticks Double Cooked Blue Cheese Soufflé paired with poached pear; and a brilliant baked Alaska. Each dish impressed in its own way, leaving me with a strong desire to return for more…

One of The Clermont London, Victoria’s greatest strengths is its location. With Victoria Station literally on the doorstep, guests are perfectly placed for the Gatwick Express, the West End and some of London’s most iconic landmarks, from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. Guests can enter the station with their key card - perfect for late night trips to Hotel Chocolat, or to listen to station singer who sounds eerily similar to Amy Winehouse.
The Clermont may not chase cutting-edge trends, but its allure lies in heritage, hospitality and a sense of place that feels distinctly London. For locals and travellers seeking a seamless travel experience, history and convenience, expect a visit or stay that will resonate long after checkout.
